The monthly cold reading series, The Big Bang, is set to make a return for a new fall season at Judson Memorial Church. This series, which kicks off on September 17, was founded in the fall of 2024 as a community gathering showcasing excerpts of works in progress.
Each month, writers can submit up to 10 pages of their plays, pilots, or screenplays for consideration. From the submissions, five scripts are selected by the series producers, with casting announcements made around 7:15pm on the event day. The evening starts at 6:30pm with a complimentary meal for all attendees, followed by the readings at 7:30pm, interspersed with performances by rotating musical guests.
The brainchild behind The Big Bang is writer Jonathan Caren, with support from Senior Minister Rev. Micah Bucey and Resident Minister for Arts & Worship Rev. Bridget Anthony. The series is produced by a team consisting of Caren, Hayley Jonsen Watkins, Serena Berman, and Michelle Vera. According to Caren, the series aims to foster creativity and community spirit.
Notable past participants in The Big Bang include writers like Rachel Bonds, Nick Blaemire, and Ngozi Anwanyu, among others. The series has also featured musical guests such as Lindsey Kraft, Ava Delaney, and Ben Folds. The first session of the fall season is open to all at Judson Memorial Church in NYC, with subsequent dates announced monthly during the event and online.
The event provides a platform for emerging and established writers to showcase their works in a supportive environment. It offers a unique opportunity for actors and audience members to engage with new material and be part of a vibrant creative community. The Big Bang has become a staple in the New York theater scene, providing a space for artistic exploration and collaboration.
As the series returns for its new season, it continues to attract a diverse range of talent and audiences, contributing to the cultural tapestry of the city. The blend of fresh voices and established artists ensures a dynamic and engaging experience for all involved. The Big Bang stands as a testament to the power of community and creativity in shaping the theatrical landscape.
With each session, The Big Bang offers a glimpse into the creative process and the evolution of storytelling. It serves as a platform for innovation and experimentation, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the performing arts. The series’ impact extends beyond the stage, fostering connections and inspiring new generations of artists.
As the fall season approaches, anticipation builds for the unveiling of new works and the collaboration between writers, actors, and audiences.
