A magic intervention program has been studied for its impact on cognitive function and neurocognitive performance in elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Cognitive training is recognized as a management option for MCI, aiming to improve executive function. The study recruited 24 participants aged 60–80 with MCI, dividing them into a magic intervention group and a control group. The magic intervention group underwent a 6-week program, while assessments were conducted before and after the intervention to evaluate cognitive function and neurocognitive performance.
Results indicated that the magic intervention significantly improved scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, reflecting enhanced cognitive function. However, there was no significant improvement in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. In terms of neurocognitive performance, the magic intervention group showed positive effects on accuracy, reaction times, and P3 amplitudes during the Flanker task, which assesses attention and inhibitory control.
MCI is a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia, characterized by early executive function deficits. The cognitive reserve hypothesis suggests that cognitive training can prevent the progression of MCI to Alzheimer’s disease. Magic, as a form of cognitive training, engages the brain areas associated with conflict monitoring and error detection, enhancing executive cognitive functions related to attention and inhibitory control.
The study highlights the potential benefits of a magic intervention program in improving cognitive function and neurocognitive performance in elderly individuals with MCI. Lifestyle intervention programs, such as magic practice and performance, may offer a novel approach to prevent the progression of MCI to AD. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and mechanisms underlying the cognitive benefits of magic interventions in this population.
