Questacon’s Cat Nielsen is set to ignite the excitement of science through a series of engaging performances in the Riverina region. Bringing a blend of marshmallow cannons and magic tricks, Cat aims to captivate children’s imaginations and spark their curiosity about the wonders of science. As part of a 12-member team from Questacon, the national science and technology center in Canberra, Cat will be showcasing the thrill of science to audiences in Wangaratta, Wodonga, Henty, and Albury.
Growing up on the border, Cat’s early schooling years at Thurgoona Public School and later Trinity Anglican College nurtured her passion for science. Inspired by a family trip to a fossil site, she developed a keen interest in paleontology. Cat’s academic journey led her to study zoology and archaeology, eventually landing her at Questacon’s Science Circus as the national touring programs team leader.
Cat’s career trajectory, from internships at Naracoorte Caves to stints in Scotland and Canada, has been a whirlwind of scientific exploration and education. Her role at Questacon involves showcasing the fun side of science, dispelling the notion that science is confined to laboratories and white coats. Through interactive demonstrations involving fluids, flight, bubbles, and liquid nitrogen, Cat and her team aim to demonstrate that science is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The Questacon Science Circus emphasizes the idea that anyone can be a scientist by simply asking questions and exploring the world around them. By incorporating magic tricks and DIY experiments using everyday household items, the team aims to make science engaging and relatable to young audiences. One of Cat’s favorite experiments involves transforming a vacuum cleaner into a marshmallow cannon, a hands-on activity that combines fun and learning.
Performing at schools, hosting pop-up shows, and participating in events like the Henty Machinery Field Days, Cat and her team strive to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. By fostering a love for science and encouraging curiosity, Questacon’s Science Circus aims to make a lasting impact on young minds, demonstrating that science is not only educational but also entertaining and accessible.
As Cat prepares for the upcoming shows in the Riverina region, her enthusiasm for engaging with audiences and sharing the joy of science shines through. Through her dynamic presentations and infectious passion for science, Cat Nielsen embodies the spirit of Questacon’s mission to make science a fun and interactive experience for all.
