Rhea Perlman, known for her versatile acting career, took on a new challenge for her role in the movie “Marvelous and the Black Hole” by learning magic tricks. In the film, Perlman portrays an experienced magician, a role that required her to perform actual magic tricks on screen. Despite initial trepidation, Perlman embraced the opportunity to learn these tricks, crediting the movie’s writer and director, Kate Tsang, for pushing her out of her comfort zone.
To prepare for her role, Perlman underwent training with magician Kayla Drescher in Los Angeles, dedicating a month to mastering the basics of magic. Reflecting on this experience, Perlman humorously remarked that attempting to become a magician at the age of 70 might not have been the most practical choice, likening it to a short person pursuing a career in basketball. Nonetheless, she found the process enjoyable and rewarding.
In “Marvelous and the Black Hole,” Perlman’s character serves as a mentor to a troubled teenager, played by Miya Cech. Off-screen, Perlman engages in activities like meditation, yoga, and dancing to stay physically and mentally fit. She shared how these practices, particularly meditation, have been instrumental in managing anxiety and self-doubt, providing her with a sense of calm and clarity.
Despite her initial reluctance to watch herself on screen, Perlman has come to terms with viewing her performances over time. Looking back on her work in “Marvelous and the Black Hole,” filmed two years ago, Perlman now appreciates the distance that time has afforded her in evaluating her acting.
As for future projects, Perlman remained tight-lipped but expressed excitement about upcoming opportunities in her career. “Marvelous and the Black Hole” is currently showing in theaters, showcasing Perlman’s talent and dedication to her craft in a new light.
